How to Safely Backup and Restore the Android Kernel

How to Backup and Restore the Android Kernel

If yesterday I posted an article about the best custom kernel collection 2020, so now I will explain how to safely backup and restore the Android kernel.

The kernel does play an important role in an operating system, including Android. By using the right kernel, smartphone performance can be maximized and can be adjusted according to our needs.

But before installing a custom kernel, it would be nice if we backup the kernel first to avoid things that are not desirable..

On this occasion I will explain how to easily and safely perform backup and restore kernel on Android.

Why do you have to backup the kernel?

The purpose of doing a kernel backup is to avoid the things that are not desirable. For example experiencing bootloop after installing a custom kernel.

If there is a bootloop, it means there is an error in the installation process, or there is indeed a problem with the custom kernel file that you installed (corrupt).

If something like this happens, you don't need to worry. If you have made a backup of the default Android kernel, then you just need to restore the kernel.

What are the benefits of doing a kernel backup?

As I explained before, if you have backed up the kernel, you only need to restore the kernel when you have problems after installing the custom kernel.

If you experience bootloop after installing the custom kernel, but you have not backed up the kernel stock, you will inevitably have to do a Flash ROM.

Very troublesome isn't it?

What should be prepared for kernel backup?

Before doing a kernel backup, make sure your smartphone is installed TWRP. Because the kernel backup and restore process is done via TWRP.

If your smartphone is not installed TWRP, follow this tutorial to install TWRP.

There are many types of TWRP, such as TWRP Official, PBRP (Pitch Black Recovery), Orange Fox Recovery, Batik Recovery, etc.

Any TWRP doesn't matter, all TWRPs can do kernel backups.

The second thing to prepare is to make sure your smartphone battery is above 50%. Do not let the kernel backup / restore process then suddenly your smartphone dies because it runs out of battery.

How to backup and restore the kernel

Note: Here I use TWRP type PBRP (Pitch Black Recovery Project).

a. How to Backup the Android Kernel

1. Reboot Recovery

Turn off your smartphone, then turn it on again by pressing the power + volume up (+) button until the phone vibrates and displays the phone logo.

2. Select Backup menu

After entering recovery mode (TWRP), select the backup menu.

4. Reboot System

After the restore process is complete, select Reboot System to restart.

How to avoid failing when doing a kernel backup or restore?

Back to the first point, so as not to fail when doing backup or restore the kernel, make sure your phone's battery is above 50%, and also do it carefully, follow step by step and don't rush.

If necessary while drinking coffee, so that you are more santuy (relaxed).

Where to save the kernel backup file?

  • If you use PBRP, the kernel that you backup will be saved in the PBRP folder.
  • If you use OrangeFox Recovery, the backup kernel will be saved in the directory: Fox / BACKUPS
  • If using TWRP Official, the backup kernel will be saved in the directory: TWRP / BACKUPS

Finally, that's how to back up the default ROM kernel and how to restore it. The above tutorial can be applied to Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Samsung, Asus, Andromax smartphones or other Android smartphones, provided that TWRP is installed.

Hopefully this article can help, if you have questions please ask in the comments column. Insha Allah will be replied as soon as possible.

Thank you ~
